Nikki Talley revives folk music at Gillie's
This week, their music took them to Gillie's in downtown Blacksburg. The calm atmosphere of the vegan hotspot matched the folk-oriented roots music that is reminiscent of Talley’s home in Asheville, N.C. “I’m in my mid thirties and it’s really cool to see a new generation appreciating this new wave of roots music,” Talley said.

Recently there have been a series of state legislation in various places across the country that pits the rights of the LGBT community and religious rights against each other. In North Carolina, HB 2 has made it illegal for people to use bathrooms that do not correspond with their sex at their birth, regardless of any mental or physical changes since then.

The Hipster Barbie Instagram account has been circulating the Internet recently as people raise awareness to the cliché photos of sushi plates and sunsets filtered with Valencia that we’ve all gotten so used to seeing. Although all of us at The Black Sheep use a combination of good lighting, creative angles, and clever captions to create unique and edgy Instagram photos, we admit that Virginia Tech has its own cliches that have surfaced among the student smartphone population.

Movie review: Snowpiercer at the Lyric
We have seen the story before: rebels from a lower class of citizens attempting to overthrow the dystopian regime placed on their society. We’ve seen it more and more often in the last three years — since “The Hunger Games” proved the plot was the stuff of blockbusters. Only this summer we saw it in Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon-ho, in a slightly darker, colder and more momentous frame.

When I came to Virginia Tech, I fell in love with the scenery of course, but didn’t consider that I would become a person who ventured away from campus to see nature and exercise to hike. However, I quickly found out that hiking is a crucial part of the Hokie experience that I could not escape forever, especially when I had landed myself in a group of friends that are inexplicably fond of strenuous walking over long periods of time.

How to Listen to Indie Cult Music and Be Outrageously Self Righteous About It.
Foster an early disdain for the taste of the masses. When everyone else is listening to top 40’s hits, listen to all the music your older brother listens to, the classic rock that your parents still love: Queen, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Journey, and learn the words to all of it. Sneering, tell everyone in your seventh grade math class that you don’t really like Miley Cyrus, and roll your eyes when that new song by Fergie plays (even though you know the words to that too—but it’s really hard not, only because you hear it so much.)
